Foreign Policy is seeking a versatile and passionate art director to help define and execute FP’s evolving visual brand across all of our platforms. While the position will be primarily focused on producing and commissioning outstanding editorial visuals for ForeignPolicy.com and our 46-year-old print edition, ideal candidates will be eager to create (and ideally have experience with) original assets and identities for FP’s events, custom content solutions for clients, and useful, engaging publications for FP Analytics, our research division.
Candidates will have a portfolio of sophisticated and current design work and 3-5 years experience that demonstrate strength with the following:
– Art direction: Commissioning original artwork from outside artists to create for editorial features and projects. Maintaining relationships (and bringing your own established connections) with contributors.
– Illustration: Creating photo illustrations or other kinds of visuals to enhance storytelling and keep readers engaged with FP’s content across platforms.
– Photo editing: Working with outside photographers to assign and edit compelling reportage and features. Making best use of existing wire and archival photography.
– Page design: Laying out departments and back-of-book sections for our 5-times-per-year print edition as well as working with developers to produce agile, engaging digital presentations of these and other editorial content that readers won’t want to navigate away from.
Editorial experience is required. Proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator CS is a must. (If you’ve used WordPress and have a working understanding of HTML/CSS, let us know.) Ability to collaborate with and imbue creative thinking throughout the entire staff will be essential to success in this position.
Please send a link to your portfolio (PDFs are acceptable), as well as resume and cover letter to email@example.com by November 21. Phone calls and mailed materials will not be responded to.
This will be a full-time position based in our Washington, D.C., office that reports to FP’s chief creative officer.

ABOUT FOREIGN POLICY
Founded in 1970 by Samuel Huntington and Warren Demian Manshel, and now published by the FP Group, a division of Graham Holdings Company, in Washington, D.C., Foreign Policy is the premier, award-winning magazine of global politics, economics, and ideas. Our mission is to explain how the world works — in particular, how the process of globalization is reshaping nations, institutions, cultures, and, more fundamentally, our daily lives. FP is a 2010, 2006, and 2005 nominee and a 2009, 2007, and 2003 winner of the National Magazine Award for General Excellence. The magazine’s readers include some of the most influential leaders in business, government, and other professional arenas throughout the United States and more than 160 other countries.
In January 2009, ForeignPolicy.com was relaunched as a vibrant, daily online magazine. Rather than merely complementing the print edition, the site stands on its own as one of the web’s premier destinations for international news and opinion. FP has recruited some of the sharpest writers in international politics to look beyond the day’s headlines to uncover overlooked stories and unique angles.
