If the West is going to stop the Iranians from developing a bomb it has to persuade Ahmadinejad and the Mullahs that it is prepared to use force if necessary. So, why oh why is the British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw taking the military option off the table?

This morning, he told the British diplomatic corps: “I don’t regard military action as appropriate or conceivable.” This is not the first time he’s said this. These statements, ironically, make war much more likely. They encourage the Iranians to believe that they can act with impunity.
