Oops...here's something I missed yesterday. The Christian Science Monitor had a very interesting front-page piece about the asparagus harvest in Germany. The European nation has a large percentage of migrant workers, many of them from Eastern Europe. Typically, some 280,000 Poles pluck asparagus from the earth. But with an 11.9 unemployment rate, Germany is trying something novel. The labor ministry has now mandated that 10 percent of seasonal farmworkers must be Germans. People are going off the dole and into the fields. The result? The farms that employ German-born pickers are finding that they're half as efficient as the Poles. Now THAT's food for thought.
