Bootlegged DVDs and knock off Rolexes sold on the streets of Beijing are one thing. But faking an entire company? The Sydney Morning Herald reports that counterfeiters in China spent years setting up what amounted to a parallel brand of the technology giant NEC Corp.

[C]ounterfeiters carried NEC business cards, commissioned product research and development in the company's name and signed production and supply orders."

[F]actories that were raided had erected bogus NEC signs and shipped their products packaged in authentic looking boxes and display cases."

[F]ake goods from these factories were on sale in Taiwan, mainland China, Hong Kong, South-East Asia, North Africa, the Middle East and Europe…. In some cases they were being sold alongside legitimate NEC products in retail outlets."
