Google Earth might be the single most interesting piece of software ever developed for the home PC. And it's useful, too. If you've never tried it, and you've got a broadband connection, download it now. You won't be disappointed. But beware: You probably won't get any work done for the rest of the day.

Google Earth might be the single most interesting piece of software ever developed for the home PC. And it’s useful, too. If you’ve never tried it, and you’ve got a broadband connection, download it now. You won’t be disappointed. But beware: You probably won’t get any work done for the rest of the day.

In the most recent update, users can apply any one of a collection of historical maps to the Google Earth globe, giving you the ability to navigate the Cape of Good Hope using a map from 1787, or walk the streets of Paris in 1716. Some of the map overlays include:

  • World Globe 1790
  • New York 1836
  • Tokyo 1680
  • Middle East 1861
  • Australia Southeast 1844
  • And many more

If you want to access these new maps,  you can find them on the Layers palette, under “Featured Content/Rumsey Historical Maps.” See the image to the right. For more help, read Google’s documentation at the Google Earth homepage.
