How is vodka made? Or rather, how should it be made? With sales and the number of producers on the rise, a number of smaller European States want an official recipe. Problem is, everyone has their own. […]

Now, a number of northern and eastern European countries have joined forces to get the EU to define exactly what vodka is and what production techniques can be allowed. There are, after all, a number of different ways to brew vodka — and it’s cheaper to make the stuff from leftovers from vintners or sugar producers than from potatoes or corn, as tradition would have it. The taste isn’t much different either. It’s time, say a number of new EU members, for the bureaucrats from Brussels to step in.
