Jill and Joe Biden stopped by the taping of Oprah Winfrey’s show this afternoon and the U.S. public learned that, in addition to Joe Biden’s reputation for sticking his foot in his mouth, Jill Biden is rather flexible as well. While her husband tried to shush her, Jill told Oprah that Barack Obama offered her husband his choice of the secretary of state gig or the Vice Presidency. Biden chose VP because, according to Jill Biden, she wanted him around more than a secretary of state tends to be.
This makes the question of a potential Biden-Clinton turf war even more interesting, as it seems he might well have chosen the better job for his family over the more interesting job for him professionally. And Clinton isn’t exactly known for being a woman who takes turf-encroachment lightly. But the really interesting question is: How did the news media, with all their inside sources, never manage to confirm this rumor and Oprah got it out of Jill inside of 10 minutes? Score one more for Oprah’s couch.
