The White House announced Obama’s intent to nominate the following individuals as ambassadors. Among them, five foreign service officers and two major campaign donors:
- Matthew Barzun, an Internet media company investor and advisor and Obama fundraiser, as ambassador to Sweden
- John R. Bass, a career FSO who has led the Provincial Reconstruction Team-Baghdad, as ambassador to Georgia
- Ertharin Cousin, a Chicago public affairs firm executive and former COO of America’s Second Harvest, as the nominee for U.S. Representative to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture with the rank of Ambassador during her tenure of service
- James B. Foley, a career FSO who has served as the State Department’s Senior Coordinator for Iraqi Refugee Issues, as ambassador to Croatia
- Kenneth E. Gross, Jr., a career FSO who has served in State Department Bureau of Human Resources, as ambassador to Tajikistan
- Samuel L. Kaplan, a Minneapolis lawyer and major Democratic party fundraiser, as ambassador to Morocco
- Jerry P. Lanier, a career diplomat currently serving as foreign policy advisor to the U.S. Africa Command, as ambassador to Uganda
- Teddy B. Taylor, a DAS in State’s Human Resources bureau, as ambassador to the Solomon Islands, the Republic of Vanuatu, and Papua New Guinea
