Defense budget debates often pit outrage about weapons costs against blanket assertions of national need. But "Protecting America: Build Your Own Defense Budget," a Web site created by New York University’s Global Beat Syndicate and the Project on Defense Alternatives (PDA), lets you make your own decisions about defense issues, including national missile defense and weapons and equipment modernization. After creating the ideal U.S. defense budget, compare it to those of "potential" U.S. foes (including Russia and China) or major U.S. allies.
Though PDA is dedicated to reducing military spending, the site links to groups with various points of view, from the Heritage Foundation to the Project on Government Oversight’s Defense and the National Interest site. So, will your budget exceed the $276.7 billion the United States spent in 1999 or come in under the approximately $4.3 billion North Korea spent in 1998? Check out the site and start calculating.
