The number of universities offering online education and online degrees has exploded in the last few years. Living in Jakarta? Take a course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Bored in Cambridge? There’s plenty to do at the African Virtual University.
Founded in 1993 and run by President Joseph Wang, the nonprofit Globewide Network Academy (GNA) offers a searchable catalog of courses available on the Web. From Oxford University in England to Flinders University of South Australia, GNA’s listing of 24,082 classes and 2,348 programs spans the globe. The database is easy to navigate, and search results provide course descriptions as well as links to host institutions so students can get direct information on how to apply.
If you’re just curious about the phenomenon of distance learning, "student" and "teacher" channels gather news items from the Chronicle of Higher Education, the New York Times, and regional papers. GNA also hosts online forums so students and instructors from around the world can discuss the merits of online education and exchange ideas.
