On any given day, devices may monitor your movements, telephone conversations, and e-mails. But who watches the watchers?
The London-based human rights group Privacy International (PI) was created 11 years ago to bolster worldwide privacy protection. Associated with the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington, D.C., the group scrutinizes laws and organizes world conferences. Its Web site, started in 1995, has created a new domain where privacy protectors band together against wire tapping, video surveillance systems, and cybercrime. In 1990, PI joined Filipino human rights groups to campaign successfully against mandating national identity cards.
Since 1998, the organization has handed out more than 50 "Big Brother Awards" to the world’s worst privacy violators. 2001 winners included the city of Tampa, Florida, which photographed Super Bowl attendees and cross-referenced the images with felons and terrorists.
