How long do insurgencies last?

American generals like to remind people that insurgencies typically last 10 or more years. I was struck by this because one of the alleged leaders of the Basque separatist group ETA, which has been around pretty much all my life, was arrested recently. It all reminds me of the 1966 film La Guerre Est Finie.
