While the signing of the new START treaty in Prague and last month’s largely successful trip to Silicon Valley and Washington may have helped boost Medvedev’s standing in the United States, it doesn’t seem to have translated into increased support back home. If U.S. officials were hoping that high-profile diplomacy with Medvedev would help him build his own legitimacy, independent of Putin, this is not encouraging.
