On their way to the Halifax National Security Forum, a plane full of senators and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano were forced to make an unplanned stop in Maine due to weather problems. But it looks like they made the best out the situation.

“Diverted 2 Maine en route Halifax — honored to greet troops leaving 4 Afghanistan!” Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), tweeted Friday afternoon. McCain also uploaded this photo, which shows how he and the other grounded senators spent their time, helping veterans greet Marines on their way to Afghanistan.

In addition to Napolitano, the plane was carrying Sens. Lindsay Graham (R-SC), Jeff Sessions (R-GA), and Barbara Mikulski (D-MD). They ran into Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) at the airport, McCain reported.

But McCain didn’t just use his stopover in Maine to meet departing the troops. In one tweet, McCain bragged, “hanging w/ Larry the lobster!”
