The folks in the lab at New America have indeed been busy. In addition to the launch conference for its new Future of War Initiative partnered with ASU, there will also be a second launch conference that same week for another new initiative, this one focused on Cybersecurity. Each project will then involve everything from nation-wide networks of experts to public databases on key issues, event series, etc.
The cyber kickoff event, titled Cybersecurity for a New America: Big Ideas and New Voices, will take place on February 23 and is open to the public, as well as live streamed at CNN. The topics at the event will range from the future of cyber war to how corporations headhunt for talent to even a philosopher speaking on what Kant can (or can’t) teach us about cybersecurity ethics. The headliners will be the Director of the NSA/Commander of CYBERCOM, Admiral Mike Rogers, and cybersecurity guru Bruce Schneier. Other speakers include reps from the American Civil Liberties Union, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and HackerOne as well as experts from leading firms like Google, Yahoo!, US-CERT, Microsoft, and Symantec. Top cyber journalists Siobhan Gorman, Patrick Tucker, and Shane Harris will be there to talk about their recent work.
Best Defense readers in particular might want to keep a sharp lookout for a session discussing where we will find the next generation of cyber warriors. Moderated by New America’s Peter W Singer, it will feature Lt Gen Edward Cardon, the head of Army Cyber Command; former CNAS head Nate Fick, now CEO of cybersecurity company Endgame; and Molly Sauter of McGill, an expert on the future of hactivism.
You can register for the event online at New America’s website at http://www.newamerica.org/new-america/cybersecurity-for-a-new-america/.
