This is a gem of postcard find from the Marine Corps Archives — as is it’s original caption, titled “Bucking for Sergeant.” Taken on June 6, 1955:

This photo from one of the toughest Marines in the Marine Corps detachment at U.S. Fleet Activities, Yokosuka, Japan, is Private First Class Earthquake.  But his stern military look (left) is only a guise he practices for the day he’s promoted to sergeant. The English Bulldog mascot is really a friendly guy (right) and enjoys a good laugh too.”

Please note Earthquake’s magisterial cape.
