Quote of the day: Wellington at Waterloo
“By God, sir, so they have.”
His cavalry commander: “By God, sir, they have shot off my leg.”
His cavalry commander: “By God, sir, they have shot off my leg.”
Wellington, glancing over: “By God, sir, so they have.”
Apparently there was some bad blood between the two over the cav commander having eloped with Wellington’s sister-in-law. I read this article about it. Hence, perhaps, the coldness of Wellington’s reply.
The poor leg later became a tourist attraction at the site of the battle.
