FP Virtual Dialogue: Bridging the Digital Divide

How 5G can help equalize opportunity in business and education.

Despite 5G’s extraordinary potential, the physical infrastructure underpinning 5G’s rollout risks leaving rural regions behind, as high-density urban areas -with more users to support costs- speed ahead with the development. This threatens to exacerbate the existing urban-rural digital divide in the U.S. and around the world, and may widen inequalities in education and economic opportunity at a time where virtual access to schools, markets and customers has become more vital than ever. However, if implemented comprehensively across the digital divide, the rollout of 5G technology could have revolutionary impacts as an equalizing and connecting force.

Foreign Policy, in partnership with Nokia, explored strategies to incentivize 5G rollout across rural areas in the U.S. and around the globe. Policy makers, leading practitioners, and issue experts discussed the barriers and opportunities in deploying 5G technology for the benefit of students, entrepreneurs, and rural industries. How can 5G be leveraged to act as a major driver for global recovery in the coming years?
