Why is democracy in decline around the world? Why do elections in many countries sometimes give rise to autocratic leaders?

FP’s Ravi Agrawal sat down with three experts at the Aspen Ideas Festival to discuss why countries are experiencing what scholars call a “democratic recession” and what can be done about it. The panelists included 2021 Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa, who is also the co-founder and CEO of Rappler; Mike Abramowitz, president of Freedom House; and Shadi Hamid, author of The Problem of Democracy.

Watch the full interview for insights on the impact of technology on democratic norms, the role of disinformation, and much more.

Also this week in Aspen, Agrawal led a discussion titled “The Global Swing State: India’s Role in the New World Order.” Speakers included Tanvi Madan, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and Sadanand Dhume, a South Asia columnist for the Wall Street Journal.
