Before becoming a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, he worked as a public servant for both Democrats and Republicans and held positions at USAID, the Pentagon, the State Department, the White House National Security Council, and in Afghanistan as an advisor to Gens. David Petraeus and John Allen.
