On FP’s new economics podcast, columnist Adam Tooze shares what’s behind the China ranking scandal at the World Bank.

The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will begin their annual meetings on Monday, bringing together some of the most powerful financial people globally. It’s a big year for them, especially as they discuss how various countries can handle the economic effects of the pandemic. But one scandal is seeming to eclipse all these important matters: IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva allegedly increasing China’s ranking in a World Bank index when she was CEO of the World Bank.

However, Adam Tooze and Cameron Abadi discuss whether we even should consider the World Bank ranking of China controversial on the latest episode of Ones and Tooze.

Also on the show: what the steep rise in China’s life expectancy says about China—and about the United States.

Ones and Tooze is Foreign Policy’s weekly economics show. On each episode, Abadi and Tooze examine two data points that explain the world.

And how do they influence men and boys? We visit religious leaders in Kenya, interview a former politician in Lesotho, and talk to male allies changing men’s attitudes toward gender-based violence in South Africa, among others. HER♀️ is a Foreign Policy production made possible in part through funding by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Check out the Season 4 trailer below:
