A river of toxic sludge broke the dam of the Ajka aluminum works reservoir in Western Hungary on Oct. 4, overtaking seven villages and inundating 40 square kilometers with dangerous chemicals. At least four people are known to have died from exposure to the toxic sludge and 120 others were injured. Above, a brick road is stained red from the toxic sludge.
