Much of the information about the situation in Syria comes to the rest of the world third-hand, as the population in many of the restive cities has been cut off from the press. Foreign journalists have been expelled as the government has cracked down. One report surfaced this week from an opposition group claiming that at least 25 children have been killed in the uprisings. Some of the children, who ranged in age from 5 to 17, died "under severe torture," the group, the Local Coordination Committees in Syria, said in a statement. Many were killed in crossfire, including Mahmood Alkadree, a 12 year-old who was hit by four bullets when he went out to buy bread for his family in a Damascus suburb.

The only photos coming from Syria were taken on guided government tours. Above, a Syrian boy rides a tank alongside others waving the national flag and a soldier holding a portrait of President Bashar al-Assad.
