Venezuelans fleeing their country’s economic crisis increasingly face border crackdowns and violence as they traverse Latin America.

Venezuelan migrants outside the Ecuadorean migration offices await authorization that allows them to enter Ecuador near the Rumichaca International Bridge on the border with Colombia on Aug. 19. Ecuador announced on Aug. 16 that Venezuelans entering the country would need to show passports, a document many are not carrying. Peru followed suit the following day, announcing an identical measure to begin on Aug. 25.
